Hello everyone and welcome back to my weekly post on my blog, where we talk about Art and Culture. Last post I spoke about the culture shocks that I’ve experienced in Izmir. Now I would like to talk about some cultural things from my country that might send a Turk into a coma. I feel like Turkish and Spanish culture are similar, but we have our different details.
For example, in Spain (or in my case Galicia), bargain is not a possibility, you can only bargain on the mercadillos (that I’ve explained on the last post), in other situations, the price they are telling, is the one you are paying. Smoking is forbidden inside every single bar/club. Here in Türkiye people is very used to be smoking in the club, or in the café, but in Spain is Illegal to smoke on closed establishments. Other culture shock that Turks might get, is that in Spain is Illegal to drink on the street, here is very usual to see people drinking beers sitting on a field, but in Spain if the police see you, you might be sued. Other culture shock that students might have been that in Spain, when you fail a subject, you have another opportunity to pass the subject by doing an exam, you don’t need to redo it the following year! That’s more a relief than a shock, I guess!
Shocks aside, Türkiye and Spain have a lot more in common that I’ve expected them to be, and all the shocks are part of the experience!
